He wrote books on political and cultural history. Navasky was an editor and columnist for the New York Times, a founder of the satirical magazine Monocle and, from 1978 to 2005, editor then publisher of the Nation. Pen America called Navasky “a stalwart defender of the freedom to write”. I’ll add that Victor’s book Naming Names is timeless, as he was, is, and always will be.” The writer Dave Zirin said Navasky “believed in me before I believed in myself. Writers Navasky edited included Christopher Hitchens, David Corn, Eric Alterman and Katha Pollitt.Ĭorn said Navasky “plucked me out of the intern program and was my boss for many years. “Victor was a true believer in the power of independent media – quietly fierce in his convictions, kind and generous to so very many,” Vanden Heuvel wrote. ![]()

If Binti hopes to survive the legacy of a war not of her making, she will need both the gifts of her people and the wisdom enshrined within the University, itself - but first she has to make it there, alive.Īmes recommended this series to me. Oomza University has wronged the Meduse, and Binti's stellar travel will bring her within their deadly reach. The world she seeks to enter has long warred with the Meduse, an alien race that has become the stuff of nightmares. ![]() Knowledge comes at a cost, one that Binti is willing to pay, but her journey will not be easy. But to accept the offer will mean giving up her place in her family to travel between the stars among strangers who do not share her ways or respect her customs. Her name is Binti, and she is the first of the Himba people ever to be offered a place at Oomza University, the finest institution of higher learning in the galaxy. The more you look at the pictures the more you find hidden. I think the term that would be used to describes them is postmodern, the surreal way they weave popular works of art, distort the landscape and portray adult and child-like themes is stunning. The best parts of this story are the illustrations. Oh and by the way the main characters are all gorillas, although the story appears to be intensely human. Some of the language and opinions conveyed could be quite tricky to explain but could also provoke some interesting conversations. It also explores quite adult issues such as unemployment in a simplistic way. ![]() ![]() Both of the children and the parents of the children, are given voices and although on the surface the story appears simple it is actually quite complex as it explores each of the character's individual feelings and personalities. It includes four separate narrative voices, which are emphasised by each having an individual font and is based around an outing to the park. 'Voices in the park' by Anthony Browne is a picture book with a difference. ![]() ![]() Jane, one of the most likeable sociopaths you are apt to meet, proceeds to lure Steven into her web, pretending to be a needy, docile woman who is so insecure she will behave just the way her new boyfriend orders her to. ![]() Jane has put her high-powered career on hold in order to insinuate herself into the life of a control -freak- religious zealot named Steven. Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone is a 2018 Lake Union Press publication. It’s time for Jane to dig out everything that matters to Steven. Nothing can distract Jane from going straight for his heart: allowing herself to be seduced into Steven’s bed, to insinuate herself into his career and his family, and to expose all his dirty secrets. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her. ![]() Least of all Steven.īut plain Jane is hiding something. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes-meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. ![]() A double life with a single purpose: revenge. ![]() 6/11/2023 0 Comments The cask of amon![]() ![]() He did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation. I continued as was my wont, to smile at his bad jokes, to provide “Cask of Amontillado” teaching materials with a “Cask of Amontillado” summary, and “Cask of Amontillado” analysis when he came for an observation. It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given my administrator cause to doubt my good will. I must not only punish, but punish while having my evaluation changed. At length I would be avenged this was a point definitively settled - but the very definitiveness with which it was resolved precluded the idea of risk. You, who so well know the nature of my soul, will not suppose, however, that I gave utterance to a threat. The thousand injuries of my administrator I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon a poor evaluation, I vowed revenge. These “Cask of Amontillado” teaching materials contain a “Cask of Amontillado” summary and “Cask of Amontillado” literary analysis, along with lesson ideas. ![]() 6/10/2023 0 Comments Narwhal peanut butter and jelly![]() ![]() The incessant charm and unabashed joy should make this an easy sell. ![]() ‘Undersea adventures have never been so darn cute …. But her decade-long track record doesn’t suggest she’s had a meaningful impact on the plight of working women. In fact, some believe that by focusing on self-empowerment she completely overlooked the forces that continue to keep women from equal pay, reaching positions of power, and equality writ large. Instantly, she became the face of 2010s-era corporate feminism. ![]() Sheryl Sandberg gladly embraced that role when she published her 2013 bestseller, Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead, and founded its eponymous foundation,.
